Pokhara Sightseeing by Car: Sarangkot, Peace Pagoda and the Lakes

Pokhara is relaxed enough that many visitors never leave Lakeside. With a car, though, you can reach the viewpoints, lakes and villages around the valley in minutes and still be back for sunset on Phewa Lake.

Sarangkot at sunrise

Sarangkot, the ridge above the north shore of Phewa Lake, is the classic sunrise spot, with Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range rising straight ahead. The road up is paved but steep and winding; allow around 30 to 45 minutes from Lakeside and leave in the dark to arrive before the sun.

World Peace Pagoda

The white Shanti Stupa sits on a hill on the south side of the lake. You can drive most of the way and walk the last stretch, or take a boat across the lake and hike up. The view back over the lake to the mountains is one of the best in Pokhara.

Closer to town

• Davis Falls and Gupteshwor Cave, across the road from each other near the airport
• The International Mountain Museum, good for a rainy afternoon
• Seti River gorge, where the river cuts a deep, narrow channel through the city

Begnas and Rupa lakes

About 15 km east of the city, Begnas and Rupa lakes are quieter than Phewa, surrounded by fish farms and rice terraces. Drive out for lunch and a boat ride away from the crowds.

Driving around Pokhara

Roads in Pokhara are calmer than in Kathmandu, and a small car is perfect for getting around. Lakeside has narrow lanes and limited parking, so check whether your hotel has space. Hill roads to the viewpoints are steep, so use a low gear on the way down.
