Car With Driver or Self-Drive in Nepal? How to Decide

The first question most visitors ask us is not which car to rent but whether to drive it themselves. Both work well in Nepal. The right answer depends on your experience, your route and what kind of trip you want.

Choose self-drive if

• You are a confident driver and comfortable on narrow, busy roads
• You hold a home licence and an International Driving Permit
• You want complete freedom over timing and stops
• You are mostly staying within Kathmandu Valley, Pokhara or the Chitwan plains

Choose a car with a driver if

• It is your first time driving in South Asia
• Your route includes long hill highways or travel in the monsoon
• You are travelling during Dashain or Tihar when traffic is at its heaviest
• You want to look at the scenery, sleep, or work on the way
• You are a group large enough to need a van or bus

What about cost?

A driver adds a daily fee and, on multi-day trips, an allowance for their food and accommodation. Against that, you avoid the security deposit risk, you do not need to learn local roads, and a driver who knows the route often saves time. For groups, the cost per person is usually small.

Safety

Local drivers know which bends are dangerous, where the roadworks are this month, and how bus drivers behave. That knowledge is hard to get any other way. If you are unsure, start with a driver for the highway legs and drive yourself once you arrive.

Mixing both

You do not have to choose one for the whole trip. A common plan is a driver from Kathmandu to Pokhara, self-drive around Pokhara for a few days, then a driver again for the return. Tell us your itinerary and we will quote each leg.
