Nepal is a wonderful country for children: elephants and rhinos in Chitwan, boats on Phewa Lake, monkeys at Swayambhunath and mountains that look like they belong in a storybook. A private vehicle makes family travel far easier than juggling buses.
Choose space over style
A seven-seat SUV gives everyone room to spread out and space for the stroller. For larger families or travelling with grandparents, a Hiace van with a driver is the most comfortable option.
Child seats
Child seats are not standard in Nepal. If your children need one, tell us well in advance, or consider bringing your own travel seat.
Keep driving days short
Break long highway days into shorter hops: Kathmandu to Bandipur, then on to Pokhara, rather than doing it in one go. Stop every couple of hours for snacks and a stretch.
Motion sickness
Hill roads are full of bends. Seat children where they can see forward, keep windows slightly open, pack light snacks and plenty of water, and ask your doctor about motion sickness remedies before you travel.
