The Best Time for a Road Trip in Nepal, Season by Season

Nepal is open for road trips all year, but each season changes the roads, the views and the pace of travel. Here is what to expect.

Autumn: October to November

The best all-round season. The monsoon has washed the air clean, mountain views are at their sharpest, and roads have dried out. It is also festival season: Dashain and Tihar bring colour and celebration, but also packed highways as people travel home. Book early and avoid the main travel days if you can.

Winter: December to February

Dry, clear and quiet, with cold mornings. Kathmandu can be hazy and, on winter mornings, fog is common in the Terai, including around Chitwan, which slows driving until it lifts. Mountain views are still often excellent.

Spring: March to May

Warm days and rhododendrons blooming in the hills. Haze builds through the season, so mountain views are less reliable than in autumn. The Terai gets very hot by May; start early and use the air conditioning.

Monsoon: June to September

Green, dramatic and quiet, with far fewer tourists. Landslides and road damage are a real risk, so leave generous buffers and consider a driver. Read our monsoon driving guide before you go.
